Urban Nighttime Lucy

Category: Glam, Personal Work, fashion

Last week me and Lucy got together for one last hazaa!  You see, my beloved Lucy Sowerby left town for the forseeable future this past week, and we very much felt the need to have one last amazing shoot together.

This was also a great opportunity for Brian to build his folio with some super elegant glam work.  So he built the amazing hair work you see here.  Lucy brought Kate into the fold and she did the makeup, and a spectacular make up job at that!

Now for all this work that was being thrown at me, I needed to figure out an equally stunning way to capture all this.  I opted for an outdoor night shoot (which proved to be mythically cold) with the city being used as our backdrop.  I was quite pleasantly surprised with the results, hope you love em’!

Urban B-Ball

If you scroll down, you will see a post about shooting eye makeup showcase for Lucy.  During that same shoot I met Dan Murphy.  He is an aspiring model.  We chatted about maybe doing some work for him, in the near future.

So a couple weeks ago we got together to shoot an outdoor basketball set.  It was not really until I got in the car with him and his lovely girlfriend and she asked “where to?”, did I realize that the thought of shooting at a basketball court was head-spinningly boring to me.  So I replied “I don’t know yet”.  This meant that we had to go get fancy coffees first (as per fancy photo shoot protocol).  On the way to Buckies, we were passing downtown, and WHAM…. there it was.  Roof of parking lot, tops of building in background!  GENIUS!  I was rather pleased with myself.

Apocalypse Nymph

acoponymph-019

So last tuesday I finally had a chance to work with Caitlin.  She is a model that I have been chatting with on Model Mayhem for some time, and we finally managed to coordinate and set up a shoot.

While chatting about shoot ideas, I was perusing her folio, and was struck with this weird idea.  Diaphanos dress made out of rags, covered in dust, hair a shambles, stark setting, a sense of post apocalyptic provisional elegance and beauty.

To this end I invited Naphtali, Brain, and Bonnie to join.  Brian gave her facial mud dreds, Naphtalie gave her a pale shimmering look, and Bonnie expertly wrapped her in this amazing fabric that we found in the bargain bin of fabricville.

All was awesome.  We are shooting.  And then this thing happens.  We have Caitlin jump in the air.  The fabric blossoms into this amazing jellyfish, sausage casing thing clining to Cait beeautiful body.  I was in love.  Here is what that looks like… >> Read more >>

Charlie Mac Production Stills

Category: event coverage

charlie-mac06010920

Nearly a year ago, local film producer, Tara McDonald approached me to do some corporate portraits for her soon to be started production company.  We did just that, they kicked ass, we were all happy.

Now it is a year later, and she has invited me to the set of two of her current productions to capture some production stills, and as many behind-the-scenes images as i wished to, which knowing me, meant thousands.

So last weekend I joined her crew for the two days of prodcution shooting.  It was a HOOT!  The first night was FREEZING cold and I ended up butting heads with the lead sound guy, as i failed to secure a blimp for the shoot, but besides that, it was a great experience and I landed some great captures out of it.

Check it!

Lucy Eye MUA

Category: Personal Work, fashion

lucy-eye-mua-1138

So not only is my beloved Lucy Sowerby an endlessly talented model, but she also KICKS ass at makeup work!  She was looking to do a fun MUA shoot that would involve the lens zooming in on her eyes, and her beloved dog Comet being the background for the shoot.

Sounded like a great idea to me, so we rolled with it.

Lucy dropped the awesome eye MUA, and Brian came in and made his hair magic happen!  The results were quite electric!

I figured a simple macro-ring flash would be best so that we could get in super tight and still have good exposure.  We shot for a bit with Comet as the background, but honestly, i feel that as soon as we moved to a simple blank wall is when the magic really started happening!

Check it out…

NES III

nes-iii-comp-5

So as many keen eyed observers may have noticed, me and Lucy Sowerby have done a LOT of work together.  What is more, I love her dearly for some of the somewhat mad and always fun ideas she comes up with.  And this shoot was no exception.

“Okay”

she says,

“I want to do the ‘American Beauty’ poster shot with NES cartridges!”

Upon hearing that, I fell slighty MORE in love with her, and immediately agreed to the do the shot.  It took quite a bit of time and effort to wrangle all the cartridges and the location, and the time, but it was worth it.  The final image took some serious composite work - you can check that out in my folio sites retouching section. Or you can check out some of the rest of the shots from the shoot down below.

Canoe 2009 Promo shoot

Category: Commercial

andrew

While I was working with the great team over at Trampoline Branding on the Chronicle Herald rebrand campaign (see below), the creative director asked me if I had much experience in the studio.  I was most pleased to report that yes, I could most certainly help with some studio work.

This is when he started to explain the scope and sheer level of awesome of this shoot.  The gig was to shoot promo images for the Canoe 2009 world championships that will be taking place in Dartmouth this summer.  For those of you not familiar, that is a basically the holy grail of paddling competitions!  Very big deal.

Spontaneous Self Portraits!

Category: Uncategorized

nick-self-349

I was quite overwhelmed yesterday afternoon with this surprising cumpulsion to take self portraits.  I knew I wanted them on a mostly black background, so I quickly called up Lee-Anne at the Bus Stop theatre to see if I could use her huge black room.  And it turned out I COULD.

Marietta Laan

Category: Uncategorized, stock

marrietta-125

Marietta Laan is a Halifax model that I did some work with a few months ago when Josh and Dean organized the photo workshop at the Bloomfield Centre.  We recently reconnected, and wanted to do some work together.  We talked about some ideas, and hashed out some thoughts.  But it didn’t really come together until Brian Hart (my resident hair magician) started talking to me about needing to get some potfolio material shot.  When I was talking with him about that project, Marietta percollated to the surface as a clear candidate for one of the looks he wanted to capture.
